SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DUTCH SUMMER COURSES

In the Netherlands and Flanders

Summer courses in Dutch language, literature and culture are a welcome supplement to the Dutch Studies courses being taken by students abroad. Three summer courses are organized under the auspices of the Nederlandse Taalunie. The summer courses are intended for non-native speakers of Dutch who for educational, professional or other reasons wish to extend their knowledge of Dutch language and culture. Courses are intended for persons not resident in the Dutch language area who are not native speakers of Dutch. Participants must be at least 18 years old and preferably no older than 35. They must have a command of Dutch at least an elementary level. A limited number of scholarships are available for these courses. In the Netherlands the course is held in Zeist; in Flanders in Ghent (University of Gent) and in Hasselt-Diepenbeek (University of Hasselt). The Zeist summer course can accommodate approximately 160 participants, the course in Hasselt-Diepenbeek approximately 100 and the one in Ghent approximately 60. Those completing the whole course will receive a certificate from the Language Union.

In the United States

Indiana University's European Union Study Center of Excellence is offering Euro 2000 graduate fellowships for summer study of Dutch at Indiana University's Summer Dutch Institute. Graduate students with an interest in public policy or those needing language training before embarking upon a professional internship in the EU are eligible. Applicants should state the relevance of their language study in the application. Graduates in other disciplines such as history or popular culture may apply a broad definition of policy studies, but need to explain convincingly how their interests are relevant to EU policy as a whole or to policy debates and research. Both US and non-US citizens are eligible.

INTENSIVE DUTCH LANGUAGE COURSES IN THE NETHERLANDS AND FLANDERS

The James Boswell Institute at the University of Utrecht offers Dutch courses for highly educated people. Each of these courses deals not only with the Dutch language, but also with cultural and social aspects of the Netherlands. The pace of the courses is rapid and therefore you need to have a fair command of a Western European language. Courses start throughout the year and at all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

The Linguapolis at the University of Antwerp offers linguistic immersion programs for Dutch as a foreign language on the City Campus (Antwerp) and on the Campus Drie Eiken (Wilrijk). Classes are given in small groups of highly educated non-native speakers.

STUDYING DUTCH CULTURE AND LITERATURE IN THE NETHERLANDS

Leiden University offers a BA and MA in Dutch Studies. The program is intended for students with little, no or an intermediate proficiency in the Dutch language, but have a special interest in the Dutch language and culture. Extensive attention is paid to the language during the study period. In addition, Dutch literature, history, art history and linguistics are important parts of the curriculum.

Central College Abroad in Leiden offers a wide variety of semester courses following the orientation period and intensive Dutch course. All students are required to enroll in “The Netherlands and its European Context,” the remainder of the schedule can be completed with courses selected from Central College offerings, Webster University or Leiden University offerings.

The University of Groningen offers a master in Dutch Culture. The master is an interdisciplinary cultural studies program that concentrates on Dutch Culture from the past up to the present. It approaches the Dutch culture in a interdisciplinary way by studying its different aspects (literature, the arts, language, politics, history) in their mutual relationship. The program wants to provide its students with a profound knowledge of the richly variegated Dutch culture as a whole.

The International School for Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Amsterdam offers in January an intensive course about the Netherlands: Art, Language, Culture and the European Union. The Netherland-America Foundation (NAF)

The Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) announces the launch of a new study loan program, made possible by the legacy of former Director and Chairman Maarten van Hengel. In his will, Mr. van Hengel left more than $325,000 to the NAF which the Foundation, in agreement with the Van Hengel family, dedicated to a Maarten van Hengel Educational Loan Fund. The Maarten van Hengel Study Loan is a three-year, interest-free loan made available to Dutch students for academic programs and training in the United States and to American students for academic programs and training in the Netherlands. A limited number of study loans ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 will be made annually. Prospective borrowers must submit a completed application form, curriculum vitae, references, proof of acceptance at an institution of higher learning and co-signers for the loan. Loans will be payable in full upon maturity.
